Merkel-cell carcinoma in Behçet's disease.
Sir, Merkel-cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare malignant tumour of the skin which is highly aggressive; frequent recurrences and distant spread are common (1). Behçet’s disease (BD) is a multisystem vasculitis, with oral and genital aphthous ulcers, cutaneous vasculitis, uveitis and arthritis as its main features (2). Association of BD with malignant tumours, mainly solid neoplasms, has been descri...
متن کاملMerkel Cell Carcinoma Concurrent with Bowen's Disease
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive cutaneous malignancy of the elderly and immunocompromised patients. It is occasionally found coexisting with other diseases, such as squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, actinic keratosis, miscellaneous adnexal tumors, and rarely Bowen disease. A 75-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of an irregularly shaped erythematous p...
متن کاملMerkel Cell Polyomavirus Strains in Patients with Merkel Cell Carcinoma
We investigated whether Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) patients in France carry Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) and then identified strain variations. All frozen MCC specimens and 45% of formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded specimens, but none of the non-MCC neuroendocrine carcinomas specimens, had MCPyV. Strains from France and the United States were similar.
متن کاملMerkel Cell Polyomavirus DNA in Persons without Merkel Cell Carcinoma
Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) DNA was detected in 88% of Merkel cell carcinomas in contrast to 16% of other skin tumors. MCPyV was also found in anogenital and oral samples (31%) and eyebrow hairs (50%) of HIV-positive men and in forehead swabs (62%) of healthy controls. MCPyV thus appears to be widespread.
متن کاملMerkel Cell Polyomavirus: A Causal Factor in Merkel Cell Carcinoma
The RNA viruses hepatitis C virus and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (or human T-cell leukaemia virus type 1), and the DNA viruses hepatitis B virus, high-risk human papillomaviruses, human herpes virus-8 (Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpes virus) and Epstein Barr virus are acknowledged as carcinogenic to humans. Human polyomaviruses have oncogenic potentials in cell cultures and animal...
